What I’m Learning About Control

I thought control meant never slipping. White knuckles. Hard rules. Strong declarations. But control, I’m realizing, is quieter than that. It looks less like domination and more like understanding. I didn’t light up because I love smoke. I did it because something in me wanted easing. Wanted silence. Wanted a pause from carrying myself. The habit isn’t the enemy. It’s a signal flare. It tells me when I’m overwhelmed, when I’m avoiding a feeling, when I don’t know how to sit with myself without an escape. For a long time, I treated the urge like a villain to be crushed. Now I’m learning to interrogate it instead. Why are you here? What are you asking for? Sometimes the answer is rest. Sometimes it’s honesty. Sometimes it’s help I’ve been too proud to ask for. I’m not there yet. But I’m closer than I was when I pretended I had it all together. Control, for me, is becoming the courage to stay present when running would be easier. And today, staying counts
